Russian president celebrates nation's Orthodox Easter

ISTANBUL (AA) — Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated his nation's Orthodox Easter early on Sunday in a service at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

"The wonderful, beloved Easter holiday gives believers hope, inspires good thoughts and deeds, and serves to affirm high moral ideals and values in society," Putin said, according to a statement by the Kremlin.

The statement said Putin noted the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations, which he said aimed to preserve "our richest historical and cultural heritage, solving key social problems, strengthening the institution of the family, educating young people, harmonizing interreligious and interethnic relations."

"The Church has always been together with the people, sharing joys and hardships with them," said the statement, quoting Putin. It added that in the face of current challenges, the church was now "actively involved in the works of mercy and charity, helping people find a strong spiritual support."

A later statement by the Kremlin also quoted Putin as saying that believers experience "sincere happiness and spiritual uplift" during Easter, as well as the joy of joining traditions "passed down from generation to generation."

"I would like to express my deep gratitude for your (Patriarch Kirill) tireless selfless work aimed at preserving, enduring historical, spiritual, moral and family values, upbringing and enlightening the youth.

"For many years, your wise pastoral word has served to consolidate society, calling for mercy, kindness and justice, helping people find solid spiritual support. Today, when we are facing serious challenges, this is especially important," he added.
