MOSCOW (AA) – A Russian senator donated 100 million Russian rubles ($1.3 million) to earthquake victims in Türkiye, where two powerful tremors jolted the southern Turkish regions on Feb. 6.

A written statement by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation said that humanitarian aid was provided for earthquake victims in Türkiye from many parts of the country.

The statement noted Senator Kerimov donated 100 million Russian rubles ($1.3 million) to the victims of the quakes in Türkiye, adding that the same amount was also sent to victims in Syria.

It also added that Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry has worked in the earthquake zones.

At least 41,020 people have been killed by two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Feb. 6, the country’s disaster management agency said Sunday.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes were centered in Kahramanmaras and struck 10 other provinces – Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Kilis, Osmaniye, Elazig and Sanliurfa. More than 13 million people have been affected by the devastating quakes.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.
