Russia’s foreign minister visits Republic of Congo as part of Africa tour

Visit aimed at rallying support in Africa for Russia as war in Ukraine enters 5th month

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited the Republic of Congo on Monday, the second leg of an Africa tour aimed at strengthening Moscow’s ties with the continent.

Lavrov met President Denis Sassou Nguesso at his residence in the town of Oyo, 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) from the capital Brazzaville.

The Russian top diplomat said that Moscow has not stained itself with the bloody crimes of colonialism and has sincerely supported Africans in their struggle for liberation from colonial oppression.

His latest statement comes in the backdrop of Russia's war in Ukraine which has strained relations between the West and Kremlin.

In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron is due to visit Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau and U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer will visit Egypt and Ethiopia.

Lavrov will head to Uganda next.
