Rwanda reports 107 new COVID-19 infections

East African country records nearly 25,000 cases, 23,206 recoveries so far, WHO says

ANKARA (AA) – Some 107 new COVID-19 infections were recorded in Rwanda over the past day, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Friday.

The new infections brought the East African country’s caseload to 24,995, including some 23,206 recoveries, WHO said, adding the number of active cases is 1,381.

Until Thursday, a total of 333 COVID-19-related deaths were confirmed in Rwanda, WHO added.

“The new cases are in Karongi [53], Nyamagabe [11], Gicumbi [9], Nyaruguru [6], Muhanga [6], Kigali City [5], Ruhango [5], Burera [4], Ngoma [3], Kirehe [3], Huye [1], and Rulindo [1]. Heightened vigilance is required everywhere,” WHO said.

WHO urged people to continue observing all the COVID-19 prevention measures announced by the Rwandan government, “especially frequent hand-washing and physical distancing. In addition, face masks must be worn in public and multi-family compounds.”

Rwanda started its vaccination campaign early this month with a high-risk population given priority. The country plans to vaccinate a third of the population in 2021 and double that figure next year.
