Southern African Development Community to send fact-finding mission to Lesotho after killing of top military commander

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - A bloc of 15 southern African countries Wednesday condemned the murder of Lesotho’s army chief and vowed to send a fact finding mission to the mountainous kingdom.

“SADC [Southern African Development Community] strongly condemns this indescribable and inexcusable barbaric and heinous act,” the regional body said in a statement.

Lesotho’s military chief Lt. Gen. Khoantle Motsomotso were gunned down Tuesday along with two other officers in a shootout with rival soldiers at an army barracks in the capital, Maseru.

The regional body termed the assassination a setback to the ongoing efforts to restore peace, security and stability to the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Lesotho, which went to polls just two months ago, has a history of political instability, military coups and attempted coups.

Three years ago, the incumbent Prime Minister Thomas Thabane fled Lesotho to South Africa seeking protection because of fears he was an assassination target.

The SADC stated in order to avert the possibility of further deterioration of security in the tiny kingdom, it will send a ministerial fact-finding mission on Thursday.

The mission is expected to conduct an assessment of the security situation by holding meetings with all key stakeholders to establish the root causes of the assassination and subsequently recommend the appropriate courses of action.
