S. African train crash kills 1, injures 100

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - At least one person has died and over 100 others were injured when two trains collided near Johannesburg in South Africa on Monday afternoon, a commuter train official confirmed to Anadolu Agency.

“We are currently clearing the scene and giving priority to those injured to be rushed to hospital,” Lillian Mofokeng, spokeswoman of the Metrorail company, told Anadolu Agency on telephone.

She said the collision occurred between Tembisa and Kaalfontein, two townships close to Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.

The cause of the crash is not known as of yet, she added.

Train accidents have become common in South Africa in the past two years.

This is the second deadly train accident to occur on the African continent in less than a week. At least 80 people were killed and 600 others injured in Cameroon on Friday when a passenger train flipped over at high speed.
