Scores injured in Sunday’s protests in Sudan: Medics

Protesters demand full civilian rule

By Adel Abdel Rahim
KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Scores of protesters were injured in Sunday’s protests demanding full civilian rule in Sudan, according to local medics.

In a statement, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) said 92 demonstrators were wounded, including two by live bullets.

On Sunday, thousands of protesters demonstrated in the capital Khartoum to demand the handover of power to civilians.

Protest groups also plan fresh demonstrations in Khartoum and other Sudanese cities on Monday.

Opposition forces and human rights organizations accuse the Sudanese authorities of arresting political leaders and dozens of activists.

Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said Thursday that detentions were made by judicial authorities.

Since Oct. 25 last year, Sudan has witnessed protests in response to exceptional measures taken by al-Burhan, most notably the imposition of a state of emergency and the dissolution of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government, a move decried by political forces as a “military coup”.
