Security conditions 'normal' in Tripoli: Libya gov't

Last Thursday, Haftar announced the launch of military campaign to capture Tripoli from UN-backed government

TRIPOLI (AA) - The Tripoli-based Interior Ministry said Monday security conditions have returned to normal in the Libyan capital.

In a statement, the ministry said that security authorities were securing public and private property, vital facilities and diplomatic missions in the capital.

The statement came amid reports about clashes between forces aligned with East Libya-based commander Khalifa Haftar and troops of the UN-backed Government of National Accord in Tripoli.

Last Thursday, Haftar announced the launch of a military campaign -- dubbed “Flood of Dignity” -- aimed at capturing Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

Libya has remained beset by turmoil since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising led to the ouster and death of strongman Muammar Gaddafi after four decades in power.

Since then, the country’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of power: one in the eastern city of Al-Bayda, with which Haftar is associated, and another in Tripoli, which enjoys the UN’s support.
