Senegal president congratulates French president-elect

DAKAR, Senegal (AA) - President Macky Sall congratulated French President-elect Emmauel Macron on Sunday after the former economy minister secured an overwhelming victory in that country’s election.

“Congratulations to French President-elect Emmanuel Macron and the French people. I wish you every success in your new role,” Sall tweeted shortly after the results were announced. "I am looking forward to continuing and strengthening with you the privileged links between Senegal and France, two countries linked by strong relations of friendship and cooperation, based on shared values ​​and mutual trust,” he added.

Senegal’s online news agency, APS, said a letter from the the president’s office had already been sent to Macron.

Thousands of French nationals work and conduct businesses in Senegal.

Jeremy Opritescom, who is the communications chief at the French Embassy in Dakar, told Anadolu Agency 13,800 French voters registered for the election Sunday. Turnout, however, was expected between 30 and 40 percent in Dakar, Saly and St. Louis. During the first round of the French elections last month, turnout was 38 percent, according to Opritescom.

"This large number of French nationals in the country is a sign of strong ties, historical friendship and collaboration between the two countries," Opritescom said.
