Sit-in against PKK terrorists growing in eastern Turkey

Families at sit-in protest say they expect support from all politicians to take their children back from terrorist

By Aziz Aslan

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (AA) - Families who are taking part in a sit-in protest for their children abducted by the PKK terrorist organization demanded support from politicians on Wednesday.

The protest in Diyarbakir province outside the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) office -- which the government accuses of having links to the PKK -- began on Sept. 3, 2019, when three mothers said PKK terrorists had forcibly recruited their children. It has been growing for over 513 days.

The families said they expect the support of all political parties to save their children from the grasp of the terrorists.

Aydan Arslan, whose daughter Aysun was abducted by the terror group six years ago, said she is determined to continue the sit-in protest until she reunites with her daughter.

Arslan said many politicians from different political parties paid them a visit during their protest. She added that the protesters demand the support of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the chairperson of the Republican People’s Party, and Meral Aksener, the chairperson of Good (IYI) Party.

“They do not see that we are here. They have not uttered a word about us. We expect them to come and share our distress. We expect Kilicdaroglu, Aksener and other parties, to demand the return of our children together,” she said.

Another mother, Fatma Akkus, who has been in the sit-in protest for her daughter Songul, said: “I am addressing all political parties. Please support us. There is no end to this.”

“We want our children back. We all live under the same flag,” she continued.

Salih Gokce, a father whose son Mehmet was abducted four years ago, said he has been continuing the protest regardless of snow or rain.

Expressing his gratitude to all political parties that supported and paid them a visit, he said: “I am not leaving here until HDP gives my son back. They can send their own children if they want to."

A mother, Fatma Coban, joined the sit-in protest from the southern Kilis province on Wednesday for her son, Huseyin, who was not heard from after he went to Syria for a visit.

Calling on her son to surrender to security forces, Coban said: “Huseyin, wherever you are, please come back. How did you fall into that trap?"

Huseyin’s brother Mehmet said: “The terrorist organization PKK abducted my brother and held him hostage. I do not know what they did to him. I want my brother to turn himself into the security forces.”

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people including women, children and infants.
