ATHENS (AA) - Aleksander Ceferin, head of the Slovenian Football Association, was named UEFA’s new president Wednesday.
Ceferin won 42 out of 55 votes from Europe’s national football federations in an election held in Athens.
The 48-year-old lawyer gave a brief victory speech thanking his supporters. His only opponent president of the Netherlands' Football Association, Michael Van Praag, backed the decision.
Ceferin will oversee European football’s governing body until 2019. He replaces Michel Platini, who resigned after being banned from football activity last year.
