Sofia Kenin pulls out of US Open after testing positive for COVID

‘I am vaccinated and thus my symptoms have been fairly mild,’ says world no. 5

ANKARA (AA) - Sofia Kenin on Thursday announced her withdrawal from the 2021 US Open after she tested positive for COVID-19.

The world no. 5 wrote on Twitter that she is vaccinated and thus her symptoms have been “fairly mild” but she tested positive for a few times regardless.

The 22-year-old stated that she is planning to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and preparing to play well this fall.

"Thank you all for supporting me. I want to wish all the players the best of luck in New York," she added.

Kenin won her only Grand Slam title in the 2020 Australian Open defeating Spanish Garbine Muguruza in the final.

The US player also reached the final in 2020 French Open but lost the title to Iga Swiatek of Poland.

US Open, one of the four Grand Slams in tennis, will be held between Aug. 30 and Sept. 12 in New York.
