Somali forces retake militant al Shabaab-held town

In a smooth operation, Somali Army backed by African Mission, seized strategic agriculture town

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) – The Somali forces on Tuesday recaptured a key town 70 kilometers southwest of Somali capital Mogadishu, pushing back al-Qaeda affiliated group al-Shabaab.

Officials said that the Somali Special Forces known as Danab, backed by peace keeping forces belonging to African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) launched an operation, to march into Awdhegle town in Lower Shabelle region.

Lower Shabelle Governor Ibrahim Adan Najah told reporters that government forces have successfully captured Awdhegle town after a brief fight.

”Our Somali National Army have liberated Awdhegle town from al-Shabaab after brief clashes. There were no civilian casualties”, Najah said.

“We will continue this military operation against al-Shabaab, until they are checked out from all of our towns, cities and villages,” he added.

The Danab Commander Gen. Odawa Yusuf Rage, also confirmed the completion of successful operation.

Awdhegle, a strategic agricultural town, had emerged as al-Shabaab stronghold in recent years.
