Somalia: Roadside blast kills 5 outside Mogadishu

2 local officials, 2 soldiers among victims of attack claimed by al-Shabaab, police say

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - At least five people, including local officials and soldiers, were killed and several others wounded when a bomb blast targeted their vehicle in Garasbaley, outside the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, an official said.

Ibrahim Mohamed, a police officer in Mogadishu, told Anadolu Agency by phone that it was an improvised explosive device that targeted the vehicle carrying local officials.

“Deputy commissioner for the security of Garasbaley, Ali Mohamed Moalim, a youth affairs official, Abdirashid Dubad, two soldiers and the driver were killed in the attack," Mohamed said.

Several civilians were also wounded in the blast and they were taken to Madina Hospital in Mogadishu, he added.

Somali-based al-Qaeda affiliated militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. The group has been targeting security forces and civilians in the Horn of Africa country for more than a decade.

On Sunday, at least six people were killed after a landmine explosion hit a convoy carrying lower Shabelle governor in the vicinity of Tehsile.
