Somalis in South Africa protest deadly truck bombing

Somali protesters in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria condemn truck bombing in Mogadishu

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - Scores of Somali residents in South Africa on Wednesday staged a protest against a truck bombing which killed more than 300 people in Somalia's capital Mogadishu.

Protestors wearing red ribbons across their heads told Anadolu Agency in Johannesburg they were protesting to show solidarity with their countrymen back home.

“We condemn the massacre of our people and those who perpetrated this attack,’’ said Omar Ali Salax, the organizer of the protest.

Salax said Oct. 14, when the bombing occurred, will always be remembered as a dark day in the history of Somalia.

“We have started a fundraising drive, hoping to raise 3 million rand [$221,172] to assist the injured in Somalia,” he added.

The Saturday afternoon truck bomb blast ripped through a busy road junction in Mogadishu igniting a fuel tanker and causing hundreds of casualties.

“I am here to mourn with my countrymen and condemn terrorism all over the world,” Johannesburg resident Shams Abdullahi told Anadolu Agency.

Yahiya Issac said he too felt the pain that his fellow countrymen are facing in Somalia as a result of routine terrorist attacks. “Those behind Saturday’s attack should be brought to justice,” he said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group with links to Al-Qaeda, has claimed several attacks in the past.

Similar protests were held on Wednesday in Cape Town and the capital Pretoria.

South Africa is home to a sizeable Somali community which is mainly engaged in the retail business sector.
