Son of drug lord 'El Chapo' abducted in Mexico

Alfred Guzman among 6 criminals kidnapped, authorities say

MEXICO CITY (AA) – At least one son of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was among a group of criminals abducted from a restaurant in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, authorities said Tuesday.

Jalisco Attorney General Jesus Eduardo Almaguer said Alfredo Guzman, 29, was among the group kidnapped early Monday, adding that there are six missing people, not 10 to 12 as previously believed.

According to authorities, the abduction took place at the La Leche restaurant located on the city main street where five armed men forced the victims into two vehicles.

“The son of Joaquin Guzman has been identified through evidence found in vehicles, the information from security agencies and expert opinions,” Almaguer said at a news conference.

According to Proceso, a well-respected Mexican investigative magazine, authorities and an anonymous person familiar with El Chapo confirmed, that another son, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, 36, was among the group abducted.

“We are desperate … [authorities] are looking for them in the state of Nayarit,” according to the drug lord’s anonymous relative who spoke to Proceso.

During the news conference, Almaguer also identified four other criminals who were kidnapped Monday, adding his team has no clue as to their whereabouts.

El Chapo -- the most famous drug lord in Mexico -- was captured in January after having escaped for a second time from a high-security prison six months earlier. He was transferred to a high-security prison in northern Mexico near the Texas border in May.

According to experts, the Sinaloa Carte -- one of the most powerful Mexican criminal organizations led by the elder Guzman and his sons -- controls the drug traffic in Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state.

Jalisco is the home to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which is considered by experts to be the most important and influential drug gang of Mexico.

According to observers, the capture of the younger Guzman could spark a wider war between criminal organizations in the region.

In 2008, Edgar Guzman, another son, was shot dead in a mall of the state of Sinaloa by members of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel. The killing provoked a war between the two criminal groups.
