Spain: Floods on Mallorca kill at least 5

MADRID (AA) – At least five people have been killed due to heavy rain and floods on the island of Mallorca, Spain, local officials said Wednesday.

Antonia Bauza, deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc, the town hit hardest by the weather, said two of the people who lost their lives were British citizens, while the other three are locals.

Nine people were also reported missing.

Soldiers and emergency workers are continuing search and rescue efforts.

Some 200 people evacuees are taking shelter in the Miguel Angel Nadal Sports Center in the town of Manacor.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Sanchez is set to visit the area later today.

The Spanish parliament also held a moment of silence for the victims.

State meteorologists announced that last night's rainfall was 232.8 liters per square meter and that more heavy rainfall is expected today.
