OVIEDO, Spain (AA) - The brother-in-law of Spain's king entered prison Monday morning to begin serving a nearly six-year sentence for embezzlement, according to Spanish media reports.
Inaki Urdangarin, a former Olympic handball player married to the king’s sister, was found guilty of using a non-profit institute to siphon off around €6.2 million ($7.2 million) of public funds into private accounts. He appealed the decision, but last Tuesday Spain’s Supreme Court upheld the conviction.
On Monday morning he entered the prison of his choice in a town near Avila, Spain, about 100 kilometers north of Madrid. It is mainly a women’s prison.
Princess Cristina de Borbón, Urdangarin’s wife, also faced tax fraud charges related to the case but was later acquitted and ordered to pay a fine.
Urdangarin’s jail term coincides with King Felipe VI’s first official visit to the United States to meet President Donald Trump.
