Storms from Typhoon Nida kill 4 people in Vietnam

Rescue operations underway as floods continue three days after the typhoon made landfall

By Bennett Murray

HANOI (AA) - Four people have been reported killed overnight in northern Vietnam after flash flooding smothered regions in the wake of Typhoon Nida.

The local Viet Nam News newspaper reported Friday that the deaths included one person who was killed near the mountainous Sapa tourist destination and three in Bat Xat district.

Seven other people are reported missing.

Flash floods have been reported across Lao Cai province near the Chinese border since Tuesday as storms associated with the typhoon lash the area.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as 16 households in Bat Xat district remain isolated after storms washed away a suspension bridge.

Meanwhile, hundreds remained evacuated in the country's north as storms continued into Friday.

Typhoon Nida, which didn’t hit Vietnam directly, made landfall near Hong Kong on Tuesday after thrashing the Philippines.

While no deaths were reported in Hong Kong, the city was mostly shut down Tuesday with wind speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour).

Nida continued over China’s Guangdong province before dissipating.
