Sudan: Protesters block roads in Khartoum after deaths

Six people were killed in gunfire near a main protest camp in Khartoum

KHARTOUM (AA) – Sudanese protesters blocked main roads in Khartoum on Tuesday, one day after six people were killed in a gunfire near a main protest camp in the capital.

Demonstrators also set fire to tyres, bringing traffic in the capital to a standstill, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter in the area.

The escalation came hours after six people, including five protesters, were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked the main protest camp near the military headquarters.

On Tuesday, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which spearheaded the protests, called on protesters to converge on the sit-in.

"Our moral duty today is to complete and protect our revolution," SPA said in a statement.

On Monday, Sudan's ruling Military Transitional Council (MTC) said it has reached an agreement with the opposition Freedom and Change alliance on the “structures of governance” and “transitional authority”.

Last month, the military deposed long-serving President Omar al-Bashir following months of popular protest against his 30-year rule.

The MTC is now overseeing a two-year “transitional period” during which it has pledged to hold free presidential elections.

But the opposition, led by the Freedom and Change alliance, has continued to demand that the MTC hand over power -- at the earliest possible date -- to a civilian authority.
