Sudan rulers warn protesters against roadblocks

Sudan's rulers urge protesters to remove barricades leading to the military HQ in Khartoum

KHARTOUM (AA) – Sudan’s ruling military council on Monday called on protesters to take down their roadblocks in the capital Khartoum.

In a statement, the council urged demonstrators to remove barricades leading to the military headquarters in Khartoum and allow traffic in the area.

Monday's warning came one day after head of the council Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan criticized protesters for blocking roads.

The council urged citizens to help the authorities "report any negative phenomena that affect security and the daily life of people".

Demonstrators have been staging a sit-in outside the military HQ as part of demands for the ruling military council to hand over power to a civilian government.

The Sudanese military had deposed President Omar al-Bashir, who has ruled Sudan since 1989, following months of popular protests against his rule.

The military also established a military council to run the country for a transitional period of two years.
