Sudanese envoy reportedly arrives in Israel: Report

Israeli state media did not reveal the envoy’s identity

By Abdel Raouf Arnaout
JERUSALEM (AA) – A Sudanese envoy reportedly arrived in Israel this week for talks on boosting relations between Khartoum and Tel Aviv, according to Israeli media on Wednesday.

"The envoy arrived to meet with Israeli officials, with the aim of strengthening relations between the two countries,” the official Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) reported.

The media outlet neither revealed the identity of the Sudanese envoy nor the Israeli officials with whom he met.

There was no comment from the Sudanese authorities on the report.

Last month, the same media outlet reported that an Israeli delegation had arrived in Khartoum after a stop in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh city.

Sudan has been in turmoil since the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's transitional government on Oct. 25. Ever since, civilian groups have launched almost daily protests against the military, demanding the handover of power to civilians.

In October last year, Israeli media warned that the military takeover in Sudan will derail the country’s access to the US-sponsored normalization agreements, known as Abraham Accords.

Sudan signed the US-sponsored normalization deal with Israel in 2020, alongside the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Morocco.

Israeli experts believe that Tel Aviv is keen to see the Sudanese crisis resolved to achieve several goals, including consolidating the normalization of ties between the two countries.
