KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Scores of Sudanese journalists demonstrated in Khartoum on Tuesday to protest mistreatment and violence by military forces.

Around 200 journalists took part in the protest in front of the Press and Publication Council in the Sudanese capital after one of their colleagues, Ali Adali, was brutally beaten by soldiers.

“This is a serious violation of all Sudanese journalists,” Amro Shaban of the Sudanese Journalist Syndicate told protesters.

“We want to see the perpetrators of this action behind bars. We will not accept anything less than that,” he said.

The circumstances of the assault remain unclear.

Husam Haidar, the secretary general of the Sudanese Press and Publication Council, told Anadolu Agency that Sudanese authorities will maintain the protection of journalists and defend press freedom in the country.

The Sudanese military, for its part, described the incident as “isolated,” saying in a statement that the perpetrators will be held accountable.
