Sudanese Islamic opposition figure detained in capital Khartoum

By Abdullah Ahmed

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Sudanese security forces on Thursday detained Osama Tawfik, a leading member of Reform Now opposition movement.

The opposition figure was detained in the capital Khartoum, his family and sources from the political party confirmed to Anadolu Agency.

Sudanese authorities are yet to comment on the news.

Reform Now movement is an Islamic party which is a part of the opposition alliance National Front for Change (NFC), which, along other coalitions led to the ouster of former president Omar al-Bashir.

On July 5, the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) and opposition parties initialed a power-sharing deal in Khartoum after marathon talks, in a move that paves the way for the handover of power to a civilian administration.

Under the deal, Sudan's transition period will be three years, ending with general elections.
