Sudan's de facto ruler holds talks in Egypt

Monday's visit is the first by Dagalo to Egypt

CAIRO (AA) – The deputy leader of Sudan's ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC), Lieutenant-General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, held talks in Cairo on Monday with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi as part of his visit to Egypt.

The talks tackled "current developments in Sudan and aspects of bilateral relations between Cairo and Khartoum", the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

There was no comment from Sudanese authorities on the results of Dagalo's talks in Cairo.

Monday's visit is the first by Dagalo, better known as Hamedti, to Egypt since the Sudanese military deposed long-serving President Omar al-Bashir in April after protests against his 30-year rule.

Seen as the de facto ruler of Sudan, Hemedti commands the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary force that has been accused of a myriad of human rights abuses in the western province of Darfur and elsewhere.

Although he repeatedly denied plans to run for presidency after the end of Sudan's 3-year transitional period, many believe that Hemedti is preparing himself to become the country's next president.
