Sudan's opposition alliance paves way for deal to resolve political crises

Several Sudanese groups earlier boycotted framework agreement with military

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Sudan's main opposition coalition said on Tuesday it has reached an understanding with groups opposed to a framework agreement with the military to solve the country's political crisis.

A leader of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition said the agreements were made with Gibril Ibrahim, the head of justice and equality development, and Minni Arko Minnawi, the leader of the liberation movement.

"These agreements pave the way for a final deal to be signed," he said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

However, the FFC leader gave no details on the nature of these agreements.

Last month, Sudan's military and political forces signed a framework agreement aimed at resolving the months-long crisis in Sudan.

The agreement provides for a two-year transition period and the appointment of a civilian prime minister by the political parties that have signed the framework agreement.

Several Sudanese groups have boycotted the deal, including the grassroots network for democracy known as the Resistance Committees, which opposes any negotiations with the military.

Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021, when the military sacked Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's interim government and declared a state of emergency, a move decried by political forces as a "military coup".
