Suicide bombers target Damascus police station; 2 dead

Similar bombing in capital’s Al-Midan district left 17 dead earlier this month

DAMASCUS (AA) - At least two people were killed on Wednesday when three suicide attackers blew themselves up in a busy part of Damascus, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

Three bombers wearing explosive belts detonated themselves outside a police station located on a busy street of the capital, not far from a crowded clothing market.

“Two of the bombers tried to force their way into a police station located on Khaled Bin al-Waleed Street,” SANA quoted an unnamed Interior Ministry source as saying.

“The attackers were intercepted by security guards, however, which forced them to detonate their belts prematurely,” the news agency added.

According to the same source, police managed to corner a third suicide bomber -- who also blew himself up -- at the entrance of the clothing market.

The attacks left two people dead and another six injured, SANA quoted local police officials as saying.

According to other media outlets close to the Syrian regime, the attack’s two casualties were both policemen.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly bombings.

Earlier this month, a police station in the Al-Midan district of Damascus was targeted by a similar suicide bombing that left 17 people dead and dozens injured.
