Suicide bombing in Baghdad leaves seven dead

BAGHDAD (AA) – A suicide bomber Monday killed seven people in a predominantly Shia district of Iraqi capital Baghdad, according to a local official.

Ihsan Radi, a health official in the city’s southern Amil district, said the bomber had detonated his explosive vest near a crowded marketplace.

"Seven people were killed and another 15 injured in the attack," Radi told Anadolu Agency.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Monday’s bombing, but the Iraqi authorities typically blame the Daesh terrorist group for such attacks.

Next week, Shia Muslims will mark the Ashura holiday, which commemorates the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein.

Iraq’s security situation has deteriorated dramatically since mid-2014, when Daesh overran the northern city of Mosul before capturing additional territory in both Iraq and neighboring Syria.

Last month, more than 1,000 people were killed in separate acts of violence across the country, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
