ADEN, Yemen (AA) – At least 7 soldiers were killed in a suicide car bombing in Yemen’s southern Aden city on Sunday, according to medical and security sources.
A bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the gate of the main security headquarters in the city, a security source told Anadolu Agency.
Following the bombing, gunmen attacked the building of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the source added on condition of anonymity because he was unauthorized to speak to media.
He said security forces imposed a siege around the attackers amid sporadic clashes.
According to a medical source, seven soldiers have been killed and 12 others injured in the attack.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Aden is the temporary seat of the Yemeni government.
Impoverished Yemen has remained in a state of civil war since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa.
The conflict escalated when Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive air campaign in 2015 aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and shoring up Yemen’s embattled government.
In September, a UN human rights report said al-Qaeda was operational in parts of war-torn Yemen, taking advantage of the chaos gripping the Arab country.
