South Sudanese authorities appeal for blood donations as supplies dry in blood banks amid pandemic

By Benjamin Takpiny

JUBA, South Sudan (AA) – On the eve of World Blood Donor Day which was observed on Monday, South Sudanese health authorities asked the public to donate blood as supplies at the national blood bank are running low.

Victoria Achut, director of National Blood Transfusion Services, requested people to turn up to donate blood to save the lives of patients admitted to hospitals.

“We are urging people to change their mind about blood donation, and understand that to give blood doesn’t mean that it will affect your health,” she said while launching a donation campaign organized by MedBlue clinic and national blood transfusion services.

Achut said there was high demand for blood in all the private and national hospitals in the wake of the pandemic.

She added the blood bank in the capital Juba lacks blood as well as staff.

Awan Achiek who lost his sister last year due to lack of blood in a hospital said that shortage of blood in the main hospitals is a very serious issue in South Sudan.

“We have witnessed a lot of people dying due to lack of blood in our hospitals, Doctors couldn’t save lives due to lack of blood supply in the hospital,” he told Anadolu Agency.

He said that he lost his sister in Juba Teaching Hospital, as doctors had recommended a blood transfusion.

“Unfortunately, there was no blood in the hospital, I had to donate my blood to save the life of my sister but the process of donating the blood took long until my sister passed away,” he said.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Bushara Abdalla, 40, who donated blood last week ahead of World Blood Donor Day said a lot of people are suffering in the country for want of blood transfusion.

“I am donating today, such that somebody who needs blood can get it. I have seen a lot of problems connected to lack of blood in the hospital, and it is difficult sometimes to donate blood that is why I came to donate blood to save those who need it,” said Abdalla.

Dr. Khalsa Yangama, a medical practitioner at MedBlue Laboratory, said that the blood donation campaign will help replenish the blood bank which is almost running out of blood.
