Taiwan sees record export orders in June

ANKARA (AA) - Export orders for Taiwanese goods hit a record high in July, according to Taiwan's Economy Ministry.

Export orders reached $40.35 billion, a 13 percent rise from the same month last year, Taiwan Today reported Friday, citing Lin Lee-jen, the ministry’s statistics chief.

The new data also marked the 11th consecutive month of growth in the country's economy, the paper said, reporting a total of $223.63 billion exports in the first half of the year, up 11.2 percent from the same period in 2016.

"According to Lin, the fast-paced global rollout of new laptops and tablets produced greater demand for the country’s ICT offerings. A similar trend in handheld devices and large display panels was responsible for the equally robust performance of electronics and optical devices, which chalked up its sixth straight month of growth in June," said the report.

Optical devices, chemicals, machinery, plastics and related products, basic metals, ICT, and electronics were the major exported products in June, it said.

Despite significant growth in first and second half, Lin warned of a possible slowdown in the third and fourth quarters stemming from mainland China’s ramped-up production in several areas, particularly display panels.
