ANKARA (AA) - Romanian tennis player Simona Halep beat her U.S. opponent Serena Williams 2-0 on Saturday to win the 2019 Wimbledon title in women's singles.
Halep won against Williams in two sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2, an extraordinary performance in the final which was completed in 55 minutes.
Following Saturday's victory over Williams, world no. 7 Halep won her first Wimbledon title.
"It was my Mum’s dream for me. She said if I wanted to do something in tennis I have to play the final of Wimbledon, so today the day came," 27-year-old Halep said.
In addition to the Wimbledon trophy, Halep bagged £2.35 million ($2.95 million) in prize money.
The 2019 Wimbledon champion, Halep previously picked up the 2018 French Open title -- widely known as Roland Garros -- with this year's Wimbledon is her second grand slam achievement.
Wimbledon runner-up Williams, 37, had been looking to win her 24th grand slam title.
Williams last won the 2017 Australian Open, her 23rd major singles title.
