Thai assembly told to prepare in case of emergency meet

Members of junta-appointed legislature told to remain in Bangkok amid speculation that crown prince could ascend throne

By Arun Saronchai

BANGKOK (AA) - Members of Thailand's military-appointed legislature have been told not to travel Nov. 28-Dec. 2 in anticipation of a possible emergency meeting, amid speculation that the kingdom’s crown prince could ascend the throne in early December.

The president of the National Legislative Assembly told reporters Monday that after meeting with the cabinet he had instructed legislature members to remain in Bangkok and prepare for any such special assembly.

"As of right now, nothing special is planned," Pornpetch Vichitchaikul however underlined.

The throne has been vacant since King Bhumibol Adulyadej died Oct. 13 after reigning for 70 year.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, aged 64, has asked for time to grieve for his father, and the kingdom is currently ruled by 96-year-old regent Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda, the chairman of the country’s Privy Council.

Vajiralongkorn does not enjoy the same popularity as his father, who was seen as a controlling factor in the kingdom's turbulent political history.

He spends most of his time abroad in Germany where his youngest son attends school.
