Killing in Sinai is third assassination of senior Egyptian military officer within last two weeks

CAIRO (AA) - A senior Egyptian army officer was killed by unidentified gunmen in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Friday, according to a local security source -- the third assassination of a high-ranking military officer within two weeks.

"Unidentified attackers in the city of Al-Arish opened fire on Brigadier-General Hisham Shaheen as he returned home from Friday prayers, killing him instantly," the security source, speaking anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media, told Anadolu Agency.

According to the same source, the gunmen quickly fled the scene while Shaheen’s body was taken to a nearby military hospital in Al-Arish.

No group has claimed responsibility for Friday’s assassination.

On Oct. 22, gunmen killed Brigadier-General Adel Rajai, the commander of Egypt’s 9th Infantry Division, outside his home in northern Cairo.

And last Saturday, a commander of Egypt’s elite commando unit, Colonel Rami Hassanein, was killed in northern Sinai when his armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb.
