Top Turkish, Russian diplomats discuss latest developments in Ukraine

Mevlut Cavusoglu holds phone talk with Sergey Lavrov, diplomatic sources say

ANKARA (AA) – Mevlut Cavusoglu and Sergey Lavrov, the top diplomats of Turkiye and Russia, respectively, on Wednesday discussed over phone recent developments in the Russia-Ukraine war, Turkish diplomatic sources said.

Cavusoglu also spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba on Tuesday.

Turkiye is one of the most active countries working to ensure a permanent cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia.

It offered to mediate between the two sides, and Russian and Ukrainian delegations met for peace talks in Istanbul on March 29.

During the talks, Ukraine signaled readiness to negotiate a “neutral status,” a key Russian demand, but demanded security guarantees for their country.

Russia, meanwhile, pledged to significantly decrease its military activities focusing on the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Chernihiv to build trust for future negotiations.

Earlier, Ankara also hosted the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine in Antalya.
