ANKARA (AA) - Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy said Tuesday that the club will cut all non-playing staff wages by 20% due to the coronavirus pandemic

"Yesterday, having already taken steps to reduce costs, we ourselves made the difficult decision – in order to protect jobs – to reduce the remuneration of all 550 non-playing directors and employees for April and May by 20% utilising," the club said in a statement on its official website.

The announcement comes as many other football clubs are facing the fallout from the pandemic.

On Monday, Barcelona's professional athletes, including football players, accepted pay cuts in order to pay the salaries of non-sporting staff.

Other European giants Bayern Munich and Juventus have also taken steps to reduce their costs.

The death toll from coronavirus in the U.K. has surged to 1,801.

The virus that emerged in Wuhan, China, last December has spread to at least 179 countries and territories with a global death toll of over 40,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.
