Train derails in Scotland, serious injuries reported
Incident takes place in Stoneheaven, Aberdeen Wednesday morning after torrential rains
LONDON (AA) – Tens of emergency vehicles rushed into an area near Stoneheaven in Scotland’s Aberdeen city after a train derailed Wednesday.
Serious injuries have been reported from the scene by the local media as smoke raising from the accident site can be seen.
“Officers were called to the scene at 9.43 a.m. and remain there alongside paramedics and the fire brigade,” British Transport Police said in a statement. Eyewitnesses say on various social media accounts that around 30 emergency vehicles are in the area.
Describing the derailment as a “serious incident”, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she is being updated regularly.
“This is an extremely serious incident. I’ve had an initial report from Network Rail and the emergency services and am being kept updated. All my thoughts are with those involved,” she wrote on Twitter.
The derailment took place west of Stonehaven where torrential rains and thunderstorms caused travel disruption and floods for the past 24 hours.
