DAKAR, Senegal (AA) - The transition to civilian government rule in Guinea will take 36 months, a government body said Thursday.
The National Transitional Council (CNT), an 81-member legislative body of the military government, said that holding democratic elections will be possible at the end of the three-year-long period.
Earlier, Guinea’s junta leader Col. Mamadi Doumbouya proposed the civil transition to take 39 months, adding the proposal would be discussed in parliament.
Doumbouya, the commander of Guinea’s Special Forces Unit, seized power in a coup d'etat on Sept. 5, 2021.
Doumbouya, who was one of the most trusted names of President Alpha Conde and was appointed by the president in 2018, announced that he had seized the administration due to the bad conditions in the country.
He was sworn in as president of the transition process in a ceremony on Oct. 1, 2021.
