Tribal fighting displaces thousands in Sudan’s Darfur: UN

125 people killed, dozens injured in violence

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Fresh tribal fighting in Sudan’s western Darfur province has forced thousands of people to flee their homes, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said an estimated 50,000 people were displaced in the period from June 6 to 11 due to the violence.

Over 125 people were killed and dozens injured in the conflict that erupted over a land dispute between Gimir and Rezegat tribes in Um Hereez village in West Darfur’s Kulbus locality.

“These conflicts have serious humanitarian implications as the insecurity makes it challenging to access the population in need, both for ongoing humanitarian programs and the newly displaced,” OCHA said.

Several areas in Darfur witness sporadic deadly clashes between Arab and African tribes as part of conflicts over land, resources, and grazing paths.

The bloodshed was the latest in a resurgence of violence in the Darfur region since the signing of a peace agreement in 2020 and the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers.

In 2003, Darfur was ravaged by a deadly conflict in which more than 300,000 people were killed and nearly 2.5 million displaced from their homes, according to the UN.
