Trump to urge colleges to ignore race in admissions

Move comes as reports Harvard University is discriminating against Asian-American students

By Safvan Allahverdi

WASHINGTON (AA) - President Donald Trump on Tuesday is is expected to rescind a policy that urged universities and colleges to consider race as a factor in student admission, according to media reports.

During the presidency of Barack Obama, the administration adopted guidelines from 2011 and 2016, encouraging collages to promote diversity and "avoid racial isolation" in their admissions process.

The Trump administration's move, however, comes as the Justice Department investigates alleged reports that Harvard University is illegally discriminating against Asian-American students, requiring a higher standard in their admissions process.

There are currently 60 complaints issued by Asian-American organizations claiming that this type of policy discriminates against them.

During the Obama era, the Supreme Court ruled universities may use affirmative action to help minority applicants get into college. Conservatives have said such programs can hurt white students and Asian-Americans.

If reversed, the guidelines could cause new brawling over affirmative action policies, which was found constitutional by the Supreme Court as long as they are matched with certain limitations in relation to the impact on white students.
