Turkish tourism minister calls on German tourists to visit Turkey at Berlin's International Tourism Bourse

BERLIN (AA) - Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Nabi Avci called on German tourists to visit Turkey, saying the country offers an alternative vacation opportunity with several types of tourism facilities.

Speaking to journalists at Berlin's International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Fair on Thursday, Avci said Turkey has shown huge success in the tourism sector in the past 15 years.

“We invite our German friends to organize their wedding parties in Turkey,” he said.

Due to recent terror attacks and a coup attempt, Turkey has experienced a significant drop in tourism last year.

“One of the main reasons was the dispute with Russia,” he said referring to a crisis after Turkey shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border in November 2015.

“But relations have now become normal and our government has taken several steps to attract foreign tourists,” Avci said.

He noted that Turkey was a popular destination for tourists from China, Japan, India as well as from Arab states and Latin America.

Turkey introduced the "Bring your neighbor and come" campaign to Germany’s Turkish diaspora at Berlin’s ITB fair.

The new campaign was announced last month in a bid to boost the nation’s annual tourism earnings to $50 billion, and to attract 8 million more tourists.

Aiming to make Turkey one of the top three tourism destination countries in the world, the campaign encourages Turkish citizens living abroad to spend their holidays in Turkey as well as bring their foreign neighbors with them on holiday.

Germany is host to the largest Turkish diaspora. Among the 3 million ethnic Turks living in Germany, around 1.4 million are Turkish citizens, according to Turkish authorities.
