Turkey coup plot: Over 9,000 remanded in custody so far

Those remanded include military personnel, police, and members of the judiciary, among others

ANKARA (AA) – Over 9,000 people, including soldiers, policemen, judges and prosecutors, have been remanded in custody so far in connection with the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency.

Of this number, 2,219 are members of the judiciary, including 348 judges, with 100 members of the Supreme Court and 34 of the Council of State, as well as 737 public prosecutors.

Data show that the number of army generals ordered remanded by judges has risen to 143.

A total of 3,168 military personnel, including colonels and lower-ranking officers, are also to be sent back into custody, as are 1,181 non-commissioned officers and 736 military students.

Meanwhile, the number of remanded police officers has risen to 918, while 825 civilians, including public officials such as provincial and district governors, have been remanded so far.

Around 13,000 suspects, including military personnel, police, members of the judiciary, and civil servants, have been detained in a nationwide probe into the failed coup, which saw 246 people martyred and 2,100 injured.
