Turkey: Movie, theater audiences rise in 2017

Number of moviegoers increased by 23.9 percent in 2017 compared to previous year

ANKARA (AA) - Movie and theater audiences in Turkey increased in 2017 compared to the previous year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said on Tuesday.

"The number of moviegoers in Turkey increased by 23.9 percent in 2017 compared to 2016 and reached 68,482,526," TurkStat said.

The number of audiences of Turkish productions increased by 31.5 percent and surpassed 37 million, while the number of audiences for foreign productions increased by 15.7 percent, to 30 million.

"In the 2016-2017 season, the number of theater audiences increased by 16.4 percent compared to the 2015-2016 season and reached 7,600,410," according to official data.

The number of performances in theater halls increased by 18.2 percent and surpassed 31,690 in the 2016-2017 season.
