Turkey: Newspaper, magazine circulation falls in 2018

Annual circulation of newspapers/magazines totaled nearly 1.37 billion, 94.2% of which was newspapers' circulation

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey saw an annual decline of 17.6% in the circulation of newspapers and magazines in 2018, the country's statistical authority announced Thursday.

TurkStat's print media statistics revealed that the annual circulation of newspapers/magazines published in Turkey totaled nearly 1.37 billion last year, while 94.2% of this amount consisted of newspaper circulation.

The institute said the number of dailies and magazines was 5,962 with a decrease of 2.6% over the same period -- 58.7% of these publications were magazines.

"The 91.3% of the newspapers published in 2018 were local, 6.9% was national and 1.8% was regional publications.

"The 81.6% of the total annual newspaper circulation was national newspapers, 17.6% was local and 0.7% was regional newspapers," it said.

TurkStat noted that the country saw a steep fall in the number of daily newspapers, down to 280 last year from 342 in 2017.

In Turkey, daily newspapers continued to enjoy the lion's share in the total annual newspaper circulation with 87.1%.

The institute said that while 87.8% of the newspapers had political/news/actual content, 2.2% of them had local content and 1.9% had sector-specific/professional content.
