ANKARA (AA) - A Turkish opposition leader on Tuesday criticized the government on its fight against COVID-19.

"The second wave of the pandemic costed Turkey a lot. In this period, there should be concrete steps instead of passing the days with redundant discussions," Meral Aksener, the leader of Good (IYI) Party leader, told her party's parliamentary group.

Turkey on Monday took new measures against the second wave of the outbreak, including a curfew on weeknights and a full weekend curfew.

According to the measures, a general curfew will be applied every weeknight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

There will also be a weekend-long curfew, from Friday 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday.

"There are some countries in the world which have protected themselves against the second wave [of the pandemic]. Your work is not pointing out unsuccessful countries, but to make Turkey to become among the successful ones," Aksener said.

Turkey from Nov. 25 started to share also the number of asymptomatic cases of the novel coronavirus.

The total number of coronavirus patients in the country reached 500,865 on Monday as 6,514 more symptomatic cases were recorded.

The country reported additional 31,219 COVID-19 infections, including the symptomatic and asymptomatic ones, according to the Health Ministry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 1.47 million lives in 191 countries and regions since last December.

Over 63.34 million cases have been reported worldwide, with more than 40.62 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.

While the US, India, and Brazil remain the worst-hit countries in terms of the number of cases, Europe is in the grip of a devastating second wave of infections.
