Turkey remands 13, arrests 73 in anti-drug operations

$8,000 worth of drugs seized in northern Zonguldak province in January

ANKARA (AA) - A total of 13 suspects were remanded in custody and 73 others arrested, as part of nationwide anti-narcotics operations in Turkey, security sources said on Friday.

According to the police, a court in southeastern Mardin province remanded the suspects in custody.

In the Black Sea province of Zonguldak, as many as 56 suspects were arrested and drugs worth nearly 30,000 Turkish liras ($8,000) were seized in 28 different operations in January, police said in a statement.

Separately, eight suspects were arrested in Suleymanpasa, Corlu, and Malkara districts of northwestern Tekirdag province.

In eastern Van province, anti-narcotics teams seized 849 grams of methamphetamine and arrested one suspect for drug trafficking.

In northwestern Bursa province, six people were arrested in Osmangazi and Yildirim districts as part of anti-drug raids.

In northwestern Canakkale’s province, one person carrying 2.32 kilograms (5 pounds) of bonsai was arrested.

Police arrested one more person and seized 8 grams of bonsai in northern Sinop province.

During another operation -- aided by a sniffer dog -- launched in the southern Adana province, almost 10 kg (22 lb.) of heroin buried underground were seized.
