Turkey remembers victims of 1993 Solingen arson attack

Five members of a Turkish family died in racist attack in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday commemorated the victims of a racist attack 23 years ago in Germany which killed five members of a Turkish family.

According to a statement from the ministry, Turkey remembered and wished God’s mercy for those killed during the 1993 Solingen arson attack.

“Hereby, we would like to emphasize one more time our concerns over rising racism, xenophobia and hatred against Islam in Europe recently,” the statement added. “We hope that these kinds of tragedies will not happen again.”

On 29 May 1993, four young men aged between 16 and 23 set fire to the house of the Genc family in Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, killing five people and injuring 14 others. Three of the attackers were sentenced to 10 years in prison while one received 15 years’ imprisonment.
