Attack in Iraq’s western Hit city 'will not be able to hinder Iraq’s fight against terrorism': Foreign Ministry

By Kubra Chohan

ANKARA (AA) - The Foreign Ministry on Thursday strongly condemned the suicide bomb attack in Iraq’s western Hit city that left at least 10 people dead and 15 others wounded.

In a written statement, the ministry said Wednesday’s "heinous" attack “was perpetrated at a time when Iraq was making significant strides in the fight against terrorism.

“We emphasize our belief that these kinds of acts will not be able to hinder Iraq’s fight against terrorism and the efforts towards normalization in the country.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the friendly and brotherly people of Iraq; [we] wish Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives and speedy recovery to the wounded.”

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014, when Daesh captured the northern city of Mosul and overran large swathes of territory in the northern and western parts of the country.

According to the UN, more than 3.4 million people are now displaced in Iraq -- more than half of them children -- while more than 10 million are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
