HATAY, Turkey (AA) - A Turkish aid agency and the United Nations sent 26 trucks of humanitarian aid supplies to the northwestern Syrian city of Idlib on Wednesday.

Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) officials told Anadolu Agency that they sent six trucks carrying beds, tents, and containers.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, confirmed the trucks entered Syrian territory from Turkey on Wednesday through the Cilvegozu border gate in southern Turkey’s Hatay province.

An Anadolu Agency correspondent in the region said that 20 additional UN aid trucks also crossed the border on Wednesday heading to Idlib.

The aid will be distributed to Syrian families living in rural Idlib, said the correspondent.

Syria remains locked in a devastating conflict that began in 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity.

According to UN officials, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict.
