ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey won two gold and one bronze medals at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on Thursday.
Turkish athletes have so far won 140 medals since the international multi-sport event started last Friday.
On Thursday, Turkish female athlete Irem Yaman won a gold medal in the women’s 62 kg taekwondo competition by defeating Umida Abdullaeva of Uzbekistan.
Another Turkish athlete Sude Bulut seized Thursday’s second gold medal in the women’s 73 kg taekwondo category by beating Iranian athlete Melika Vakili Mirhosseini.
In the men’s 87 kg taekwondo category, Turkish athlete Serdar Yuksel won a bronze medal by defeating Ramin Azizov of Azerbaijan.
The competition will end on May 22.
The Islamic Solidarity Games was first held in Saudi Arabia in 2005 with 6,000 athletes from 55 nations competing in 15 different sports categories including taekwondo, swimming, shooting, athletics/para-athletics, weightlifting, wrestling and water polo.
Turkey is scheduled to host the fifth such contest in 2021.
